Singers Groups
How to Find Singing and Vocal Groups
There are many clubs and groups of singers who love singing and working with like minded people. These are formed by singers who wish to socialise, learn and work with other singers and there are often opportunities to perform.
If you are searching for a group in your area the best place to start is the Local Library or your Town Council's Leisure & Recreation or Education Department who can provide you with local non-profit and community groups or current workshops and educational programmes available. They should also provide you with the areas Arts Council who will know of the latest funded programmes. Most Colleges and Schools have part-time, evening and weekend classes which are worth investigating. Local Newspapers usually advertise community groups and organisations meetings in their 'Whats On' or 'Diary' section and more established groups are often listed on the internet, in the yellow pages and telephone directories. Of course you can always browse through our evergrowing list below to find a suitable group or search the internet.
Why not start your own vocal group? Consider what you would like from the group, the style of music, where you would rehearse, will you need costumes, equipment i.e., Piano, the cost, would you perform in public, how much, if anything would you charge, how you will advertise and what would attract others to join you. Schools, Community Halls & Churches have spare rooms/halls often with a Piano or Organ available for hire at reasonable rates and you may have to pay for an accompianist. If you are fortunate enough to have a large room and play an instrument then meetings could be shared between members homes, however, when advertising for members it is wise to be cautious and arrange initial contacts in a public place. Once you have worked out the average expenses, then you can approximate how much to charge your members. This can be in the form of an annual, monthly or weekly fee.
Of course the best type of group is one where a bunch of friends can just get together & see where it takes them!! Whatever type of group you decide to create approach your local newspaper and ask if they could do a small feature to attract members or place a small ad in the leisure section providing your contact details (use a work number). It doesn't cost much if you start off small and build the group slowly. To keep the costs low make your own posters or flyers, place them on public noticeboards at your Library, Council etc,. and have FUN!

Thrift Music Theatre Company a small collective of professional Theatre practitioners who are passionate about sharing their skills and time with young people to make new & innovative theatre. The company was created by West End singer/director Tim Godwin & Royal National Theatre composer Grant Olding to explore the effect that music and song can have in Theatre, and to seek to challenge audiences and performers to redefine their preconceptions of what 'Music Theatre' is and can be. There are a number of ways in which young people might encounter Thrift: at School or college; during one of the company's outreach workshops;or at one of their residential courses run during the school holidays at various centres around the country. Please visit our site and find out more about our work and ways in which you can get involved in 2006.
