Searching for singers or songwriting and music short courses and workshops?   Various organisations offer reduced rates or grants for music education.  We are gathering listings and information on workshops for singers and vocal training courses, demonstrations and music workshops that contain singing and/or songwriting modules.  The UK Grant aided 'New Deal' scheme is also listed here. Try contacting your local theatre, newspaper, library, council and arts council for details of groups in your area.

A panel made up of a Speech and Language Therapist, Physiotherapist, Nutritionist and a Vocal Coach/Registered Nurse will address these and other issues affecting people who use their voice professionally e.g. singers, teachers, public speakers, voice over artists, actors. These four health and voice professionals work with performers and professional voice users. Each will present their role in the physical and vocal care of singers and professional voice users. Then together they will discuss some typical case studies, how they would treat each case and what their recommendations would be. The forum will end with a Q&A session.

The programmes are all funded by the Learning & Skills Council which means that tuition is either free or subsidised.

Songwriting & Composition Courses

Access to Music Composers Programme
The Composers programme is designed to offer composers, songwriters and programmers the opportunity to gain the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to develop a career as a composer. The programme is based in London with tuition and guidance provided by active composers. The aim is for participants to develop their creative skills whilst experiencing the main areas of competency necessary to establish a successful career. This will mean working in a variety of scenarios from original projects to commissioned work for artists and media applications (film, TV, radio, computer games etc.). It will involve working with computers and live musicians and ensembles. Course Duration: 1 Year (32 weeks)

Access to Music Creating Music Through Technology
The Creating Music Through Technology programmes are designed to meet the needs of songwriters/composers and DJs who wish to create their own music using sequencers, synthesisers, samplers, DJ decks and recording equipment. There is no requirement to play an instrument, although you will be given tuition in keyboard skills. An exciting and unique aspect is that you will be given the opportunity to create your own music which may be performed live or be featured on one of Access to Music's compilation CDs.

The programmes are all assessed via course work and you will study towards a nationally recognised qualification. These are the National Open College Network qualifications in Popular Music Practice.

Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies
Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape, Suffolk. Course of varying length in contemporary composition and performance which culminate in recitals and festivals.

British Academy of Composers and Songwriters
Basca run regular monthly workshops on Business Affairs, Songwriting and Media Composers which are supported by experience songwriters, publishers and music industry personnel. The songwriting workshop also provides songwriters the opportunity to have their material assessed by industry professionals.

COMA Contemporary Music Summer School
Bretton Hall, Yorkshire Sculpture Park. One day and a week long summer school providing workshops in composition, performance, electronic music, improvisation, music theatre, percussion, piano and voice.

Dartington International Summer School
The Elmhirst Centre, Dartington Hall, Totnes, Devon. Students can book for one week or more of these self contained courses which include concerts, masterclasses and workshops. A variety of courses are offered including choral, chamber music, orchestral, west african drumming, gamelan, african and gospel choir and junk music. Optional elements include Alexander technique and use of the gardens and swimming pool.

The School of Sound
Purcell Room, South Bank Centre, London. A unique international forum bringing together professional practitioners, artists, academics and advanced students to learn about the creative use of sound in audio-visual media.

Vocal Demonstrations & Conventions

Australian College of Entertainment’s International Performing Arts Conference is being held in Sydney Australia, July 14 to 21, 2002
The conference is brings together the finest young dance, acting and vocal performers (10 to 21 years) from all over the world to exchange ideas and share their love of performance - on and off the stage.

Students can enrol individually or as part of a group from a school, college or private coach and will be taught by Top Professionals and Master Teachers from the Entertainment Industry and Arts Community who share their time and expertise.

Class emphasis will be on performance and will integrate:-
Dance - (Flamenco, Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, Lyrical & Funk),
Acting, Singing, Choreography, Auditioning, Modelling, Acrobatics,
Musical Theatre, Television, Film, Musicology, Make-up
and the production aspects that make them work.

Parents are welcome as observers and an exciting program of events will be available for non-performers as well as Teachers / Directors.

National Association of Teachers of Singing
