G. Schirmer Americana Aria Anthology (Soprano)
This landmark series, the first multi-volume aria anthology devoted entirely to the topic, collects compelling, useful, singer-friendly excerpts from the best of a distinctly American musical tradition. Plot notes and basic information about each opera are included. Opera composers such as Samuel Barber, William Bolcom, Douglas Moore, Virgil Thomson and Kurt Weill are represented. The operas of Gian Carlo Menotti are particularly present, with 26 arias from nine operas in the series. Additionally, attractive, performable arias are included from important works such as Regina, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Ghosts of Versailles, The Great Gatsby, and Little Women. Stephen Sondheim graciously agreed to make new aria editions of two pieces from Sweeney Todd (The Contest in the Tenor volume and Epiphany in the Baritone/Bass volume) for this series. A majority of the music in the four volumes has never before been available outside the vocal scores; a significant number of the arias were especially adapted for this edition. Some arias in the series have never been in print at all before now. Many arias are appropriate for college student singers.

Johannes Brahms: 15 Selected Songs (High Voice) (Book + CD)

With diction lessons recorded by Irene Spiegelman, German diction coach at the Metropolitan Opera, piano accompaniments recorded by Laura Ward, this collection of the most often taught Brahms songs is an excellent introduction to lieder. The diction for each song is recorded twice: first recited as an actor would speak it, showing flow of the language and mood, followed by a slow, deliberate lesson, allowing time for the student to repeat each line. This experienced language coach adapts the “R” in German in the slow versions as recommended for classical singers. She is also very sensitive to liaisons between word sounds in the musical settings. Contents: Botschaft, Dein blaues Auge, Die Mainacht, Feldeinsamkeit, Immer leiser wird mein Schlummer, Meine Liebe ist grün, Mondnacht, O liebliche Wangen, O wüsst ich doch den Weg zurück, Sapphische Ode, Sonntag, Ständchen (Kugler), Vergebliches Ständchen, Von ewiger Liebe, Wie Melodien zieht es mir.

The earlier cantata, the only one with a Latin text, may have been written to celebrate the Peace of Dresden (which ended the 2nd Silesian war) and first performed on Christmas day, 1745. Lux Aeterna
Morten Lauridsen’s setting of Lux Aeterna, a five movement, non-liturgical requiem for choir and chamber orchestra/organ is a rich and intensely moving work. Choral textures are fully explored, from the sonorous, slow unfolding of the Introitus and the intricate counterpoint and paired voices of In Te, Domine, Speravi, to the cappella motet O Nata Lux and spirited canticle Veni, Sancte Spiritus. The last movement, a sublime Agnus Dei preceding the final Lux Aeterna, closes with a joyous Alleluia to provide an uplifting conclusion to this most powerful work. Each of the five connected movements in this choral cycle contains references to 'Light,' assembled from various sacred Latin texts. I composed Lux Aeterna in response to my mother's final illness and found great personal comfort and solace in setting to music these timeless and wondrous words about Light, a universal symbol of illumination at all levels - spiritual, artistic and intellectual. The work opens and closes with the beginning and ending of the Requiem Mass, with the central three movements drawn respectively from the Te Deum, O Nata Lux and Veni, Sancte Spiritus. The opening Introitus introduces several themes that recur later in the work and includes an extended canon on “et lux perpetua.” In Te, Domine, Speravi contains, among other musical elements, the cantus firmus “Herzliebster Jesu” (from the Nuremburg Songbook, 1677) and a lengthy inverted canon on “fiat misericordia.” O Nata Lux and Veni, Sancte Spiritus are paired songs, the former an a cappella motet at the center of the work and the latter a spirited, jubilant canticle. A quiet setting of the Agnus Dei precedes the final Lux Aeterna, which reprises the opening section of the Introitus and concludes with a joyful celebratory Alleluia.
